Stage Door Demands: Let Us Hope This Lunacy Is Just A Trend.

Interesting and kind of disturbing article about the behaviour of West End theatre fans outside London stage doors. Unfortunately the mania that greets Broadway actors seems to have taken root in Britain.

In the past this kind of mania was reserved for teen idols and gay divas (even then, did anyone other than Judy inspire the shrieking and kvelling that greeted her legendary concerts?). My mother grew up in the 1940's and had fond memories of pining for Frank Sinatra as later generations did for Elvis, The Beatles through One Direction and BTS. (I'm showing my out-of-touch-ness: those bands are old news by now.)

Theatre actors- especially the notoriously poorly-paid UK actors- simply don't make nearly enough money to write this kind of behaviour off to being part of the gig. Doing eight three-hour shows a week of a demanding play or musical for a couple of thousand pounds a week (and that, I suspect, is only a rare minority) is more than enough and I applaud these performers for risking the backlash of these rabid fanboyz and fangrrls to say "uh uh".

The ghastly ranks of sad middle-aged men shoving 8x10's into their face for autographs (to be sold and bartered) have now been joined or replaced by an ungainly assemblage of parents and children, the mothers shoving their daughters up to the front of the line and forcing the poor performers to pose for photos. I can understand for actors who make millions of dollars a year that their salary depends on the adoration of the fans, but I don't think that holds water for your average Broadway performer.

I saw a show the other day and was really struck by a performer who did a beautiful job and I wanted to tell them. I looked them up on FB, found them and sent a message to which they replied within seconds. Hopefully they appreciated it and I was glad to know they got it and read it. That seemed so much more satisfying than strong-arming someone at a stage door between performances.
