I saw the show the other night, and while the performers were very good, I felt bad for Eden Espinosa in particular. It was the Wednesday evening performance, and it sounded like she was being careful with her voice early in the evening. That's understandable for the 2nd show of the day to pace oneself. She let loose later on, as required by the score, and then her voice betrayed some tiredness to it. Amber Iman and the others had some challenging music to sing as well, but the fact that they are supporting players at least had them singing a lot less than Ms. Espinosa is required to do all evening. I feel bad they are going to be out of work, but I think in a way this curtailed run will save Ms. Espinosa's voice from longer-term vocal damage/distress. I thought the score was quite derivative in that Andrew Lloyd Webber/contemporary "American Idol" go for the vocal break/hit the upper range kind of way unfortunately. It's just very ungraceful vocal writing, certainly for someone to do 8 times a week. I thought it was refreshing to see a lesbian story as part of a love triangle front and center in a Broadway musical. But the amplification got kind of loud after a while, and some of the musical numbers got relatively tepid applause; they were performed well, but didn't have the substance of being memorable songs.
