As often happens, you’re being reductive, but I agree that musical theater has been more woke than most other set forms. That said, let’s do some down and dirty real talk:

How many musicals are by *and* about Black women?
Black men?
Latine people?
Asian people?
The folks and their cultures have shown up in musicals, but rarely are they written from within that culture.

How many musicals are about lesbians?
How many feature trans characters?
Non-binary characters?
Neuro-divergent characters?
Characters with disabilities performed by actors with disabilities?

How many shows are ultimately about affirming cis-gender, straight romantic storylines?

How many are ultimately about upholding the patriarchy?

Off the top of my head, I can think of woefully few musicals, still, that are genuinely woke to much extent, until we get into the last 20 - 40 years.
