Except I feel in casting the show the creative team DID have race on its mind. What I was struck by was the decision that only White actors would be cast in the role of villain. Joshua Boone's fresh-faced handsomeness and generally clean-cut demeanour would have fit in perfectly with the Socs, as would any number of Black actor/dancer/singers in this city. (Which makes me wonder how many Black guys have popped up as missionaries in The Book of Mormon? I know a slew who'd be great.) If I was completely ignorant of the novel and film I'd leave the musical thinking that I'd just seen a story about race-based aggression, which is not what S.E. Hinton wrote. It's a story of class-based antagonism. I'm not denying that the book tries to stress that, but the imbalance of White vs. non-White performers kept intruding.
