| I share some of the same misgivings and reservations about theater Ensemble awards that BroadwayTonyJ has. If there IS to be one, I'd prefer what the Drama Desk does. This year, its nominators singled out ''Stereophonic'' for a special award for Ensemble. And like years, when a show gets that honor, the Drama Desk takes that cast out of contention for the competitive categories. That way, actors from ''Stereophonic'' can't double-dip: win 2 awards for the same performance. Also, this opens it up for performers from other shows to win a Drama Desk. I'm not a fan of adding a Tony Ensemble award. How do you define ''ensemble''? Would that include the swings and understudies? With musicals, that can add up to a few dozen performers altogether. So if ''Hell's Kitchen'' or ''The Outsiders'' won Ensemble, does that mean giving out a few dozen Tonys to each of those performers? And if you have, say, 5 nominees in Ensemble for a Musical, you could easily top 100 Tony nominees. (By the way, the Tonys have the discretion to give out special awards, as they did when they honored the Deaf West ensemble of ''Big River.'') There have to be some limits. For instance, several tears ago, the Grammys started recognizing ''principal soloists'' for Musical Theater Album. But it got abused: ''Hamilton'' submitted 10 of them; ''Dear Evan Hansen,'' 8. Now, the Grammys have cut back to what seems like only 4 ''principal soloists.'' Compared to the Grammys, Oscars and Emmys, the Tonys already give out prizes from a comparatively small pool of contenders. What makes an award special largely is its exclusivity. Not everyone can win one. If you start tossing out dozens of Tonys, it diminishes the honor. |
