I saw Here Lies Love at the Public in 2014. It ran over a year and was a highly successful non-profit production, easily one of the best off-Broadway musicals with an original score that I have ever seen. It made a star out of Ruthie Ann Miles and put Conrad Ricamora on the map. The time to move it to Broadway was back then when the show was talked about and hot. However, the right venue was crucial because it was a small show. Circle in the Square is the only Broadway theater that would have made sense. They didn't need to tear up seats (which wouldn't have been allowed). The actors could have performed on a raised platform down the center of the stage with audience members standing on each side. Ruthie Ann Miles would have been a huge draw, and it would have been a wise business decision to keep the original all-Asian (but not all-Filipino) cast intact.

The show, the score, and the performances of Miles and Ricamora were Tony worthy in a production that was sensible and savvy. Broadway is a business. Losing sight of that fact can lead to disaster which is exactly what happened to last year's production of Here Lies Love. It was a producing and commercial fiasco (to the tune of $22 million). I'm glad that the Tonys recognized the score with a nomination. It may win, but I have a hunch the award will go The Outsiders, which is doing well at the box office.

You speak about Asian-American actors as if they are children. They're not. They are adults, just like white, black, and Latino actors. They have choices. If they get involved with foolhardy productions that break Broadway rules, they will face the consequences just like others who already have paid the price -- I've actually spoken with a few of them in recent years including one who has a Tony.
