In the history of the Tony Awards, I'm pretty sure there has never been a nominee for Best Musical that closed before the nominations at a loss of anywhere near $22 million. I'd estimate The Scottsboro Boys at something like $6 million.

If I had to guess at the show that would have taken the slot that went to Illinoise, I would say Back to the Future.

The Best Musical Tony is for the production, not specifically the quality of its book, score, or performances, (although those elements are certainly factors). The challenges to WaymanWong's post are about the incredibly poor job of producing perpetrated by the Here Lies Love Broadway team.

For the record, my family is at least 40% Asian and/or Asian-American. My niece Lisa (Korean-American) is an avid theatregoer and a reader (but not a poster) on ATC and BWW.
