Just got home so this is a bit meandering.

The show has incredible word of mouth in Chicago, and as you probably know, is already booked on Broadway even before the official reviews have come out.

This may be a case of me being the wrong audience for the show, but I found it shrill, manic and repetitious. So many people have said how funny it is. It’s silly, but not partially clever or witty. I laughed, but only because the pros on stage can make most things funny. The show has two vulgar jokes that are inconsistent with the tone of the rest of the show. I hope they drop them.

The show seems tailor made for the gays and gals who love RuPaul’s Drag Race. The opening number is titled something along the lines of ‘For the Gays” The overall tone of diva worship is a big part of the show, as I imagine it was in the film. I’ve only seen bits and pieces.

In that vein, Williams does a lot of entering, posing, getting applause for her costumes and strutting. The kind of thing Eartha Kitt was the master of. Williams is not. She sings well, but not in a way that feels theatrical. She brings zero mystery and menace to the role.

Simard and Sieber are excellent. Hilty is good.

None of the songs are memorable and as good as the performers are, the battle of the belting divas gets repetitive.

Sieber provides the only bit of humanity in the show. The show has no heart, but I think that is the intention. I enjoy a dark comedy, but this just feels hollow.

The show is great looking. I wish the dance ensemble was given a big show stopper. They deserve it and it would provide a nice break from the constant bickering of the leads.

Clearly, not a show for me, but many will love it.
