Beverly Sills was Michael Bennett's first choice. She was tied up with opera commitments and couldn't do it. Dolores Gray played the part in workshops, but Bennett had a different concept for the part. Ironically, Gray turned down the role of Miss Hannigan in the Annie tour to do the workshops.
Cloris Leachman had said that she desperately wanted the role in The Queen of the Stardust Ballroom TV movie. I wonder if she was ever considered or approached for the musical. |
