British theatre has paid its artists and craftspeople shockingly low rates. Even in commercial West End theatres. I imagine stars can command decent wages but the average actor- sometimes with decades of experience- is woefully underpaid as far as I have heard. And the number of Off-West End theatres that don't pay their actors anything surprised me. They get paid a split of the box office after expenses, I think/
