| They seem to just throw any and everything at all *as long as* it has a score my a successful musical artist who never otherwise works in the theater space. And on top of that, there are very few musicals coming to nyc that don't have books written or co-written by very acclaimed playwrights or screenwriters, most of who never do musicals normally or have never had success with any kind of theatrical work that resembles a musical or the musical they're doing. John Logan is an excellent writer. But he is mostly known for the 2 person character dramedy Red, and his mostly excellent movie scripts. Writing movies is very very different than writing plays and or musicals for the stage. And while I know he is a big musical theater fan, and I know he was writing to the pleasure of Tim Burton, what Logan did to Sweeney Todd's book for the movie... oof. He has every right and reason to write the book to a musical. I have no right to speak as if he or anyone else doesn't. But I do find it weird and counter-intuitive how often pop and non-theater songwriters are teamed up for their first musical with notable writers who also have little to no experience writing musicals for the stage and whose other work (writing plays or screenplays) is extremely far off from they kind of musical they're writing or what's required for that musical. I hope for the best. I love the music of the Avett Brothers and I could definitely see them writing a score for a musical that would work and that I would like. I hope Swept Away turns out to be that. (though I do wish they'd picked a different title that wasn't already taken by 2 fairly famous movies) |
