She doesn’t want Ophelia interrupting the obsessive order of her life with obnoxioussongs about death and valentines. She doesn’t want Ophelia disrupting her relationship with Edmund, the oddly charming actor who might show up for dinner in a suit…of armor. And she most definitely doesn’t wantOphelia stirring up memories of a brother she would rather forget. But Ophelia doesn’t care about what Janewants so much as what she needs. As Jane’s past intrudes dangerously on her present, it becomes clear thatOphelia is not simply a character from Hamlet, but a long-forgotten messenger with a question from Jane’s own troubled mind: How do you move on when reconciliation is not an option?Drowning Ophelia is a gorgeously dark and haunting play that deals with the subject of abuse and forgiveness ina beautiful, lyrical and absurdist way. “Men and women are touched every day by abuse in their lives, often atthe hands of a loved one,” says, playwright Strayer. “Drowning Ophelia is important because it sheds light onthis very real issue, an issue we tend to ignore in our society.”

Outside, the plague assails its doors, and the distant threat of war draws nearer. Brooding in his echoing theater one weather-beaten night, Richard Burbage is lost in thought."How might I resurrect this house? UC BERKELEY DEPARTMENT OF THEATER, DANCE, AND PERFORMANCE STUDIES OPENS 2013-2014 SEASON WITH A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM Performances run October 18-27 in Zellerbach Playhouse. For tickets, visit tdps.berkeley.edu TDPS opens its 2013-2014 season with one of Shakespeare’s most magical and endearing comedies in honor of the Bard’s upcoming 450th birthday. Christine Nicholson will direct the story of the four young lovers crossing paths in an enchanted forest, setting the production during the 1960s. “I thought the tension of the time fit the tension of the play,” says Nicholson. “We see how far people will go in the pursuit of love; we see the lengths that authority will go to keep the status quo. We see the effects of desire and the pursuit of power.”The colorful production will feature a cast of thirty student actors. “I love working with large casts,” says Nicholson. “There is an energy you don’t find in smaller groups. And with a large cast we can more fully create the world of the play, and many more actors can have a part in that world. The UC actors are always so incredibly engaged, committed, enthusiastic, and an absolute joy.”For the student actor, Shakespeare’s plays have a particular appeal and relevance. “Shakespeare's language provides one of the best challenges for putting their vocal training to work,” says Nicholson. “His characters are archetypal, and deeply drawn. The heart of this play reaches down into our collective humanity, past those human attributes that separate us, and takes us on a shared journey of human experience.”The creative team includes Choreography by Nathaniel Justiano, Scenic Design by TDPS alumna Gena Whitman, Costume Design by Wendy Sparks, Lighting Design by David K. H. Elliott, and Sound Design by Ian Thomas. TICKETS AND INFORMATION A Midsummer Night’s Dream opens Friday, October 18th at Zellerbach Playhouse on the UC Berkeley campus, and runs weekends through Sunday, October 27th. WORLD PREMIERE OF BRIAN COPELAND’S “THE SCION” written in collaboration with/directed by David Ford The Marsh presents a tale of murder, privilege, and sausage with the World Premiere of THE SCION, performed by award-winning performer Brian Copeland (Not a Genuine Black Man, The Waiting Period), written by Brian Copeland in collaboration with David Ford, and directed by David Ford. In his third solo show, Copeland employs his razor sharp wit to explore the roles of privilege and government regulation in modern society. Using the events surrounding the infamous June 2000 murders of three meat inspectors at the Santos Linguisa factory in San Leandro as a case study, Copeland examines the uneasy relationship between the law, and those who grow up believing they are above it. Delivered with Copeland’s signature style, THE SCION skillfully tiptoes the line between comedy and tragedy, adding a dash of humor to this riveting ripped-from-the-headlines subject matter. Copeland was most recently seen in his critically acclaimed one-man-show The Waiting Period, and broke the record for the longest-running solo show in San Francisco history with Not a Genuine Black Man.
