Patti and Bernadette back-to-back

Posted by: bicoastal 10:56 am EDT 10/21/13

Saw Patti Lupone & Seth Rudetsky at 5PM at the Broad on Saturday night, then went directly to Northridge to see Bernadette Peters at 8PM. It was a fascinating opportunity to see two major Broadway stars back-to-back. What wildly different musical approaches they take! Both performed "The Ladies Who Lunch" and where Patti was bold and fierce and angry, Bernadette was deliberate and very specific, even taking the song a bit under tempo. I loved the chatty format of Seth and Patti although I noticed at least 8 people walked out during the concert. Patti sang less than ten songs, Bernadette did her full-on nearly 90-minute set, performing almost all of her ballads under tempo. It was quite a great evening!
