Chad Deity in San Diego

Jeanie's review of the San Jose/Sacramento production aptly describes the plot of this Pulitzer finalist. I would add that the San Diego production at the 49-seat ion Theatre benefits from having the audience right on top of the action plus smart direction and fight choreography. The play's language sounds remarkably contemporary, despite having been written several years ago (with one exception: do hipsters still call something "dope?"). The 100-minute running time just zips along at ion, and my only criticism is that the plot seems repetitive by 2/3 of the way through Act 2. but, this one is an audience-please, more so than "Welcome to Arroyo's," which the Old Globe produced a couple of seasons ago. Mr. Diaz writes slowly (his output includes only four full-length plays, and one, "The Upstairs Concierge") is only at the workshop stage, scheduled for the Goodman in December. But, his unique voice makes him a regional theatre darling and has won him a lot of fellowships and residencies.

Chat Deity is a definite winner and should do well for companies that produce it, but I hope that it does not prove to be a one-play flash-in-the-pan.
