Unfortunately, you're hitting us at a time when several theatres have productions shifting. Several productions, including The Few, closed today. The Last Goodbye and The Tallest Teee close next Sunday, but if the descriptions of both of them left you cold, then I'd give them a miss. And, too bad your trip isn't a little longer. On the 5th you could have caught the first preview of Side Show.

Of what is playing, I'd certainly recommend Chad Deity at the 49-seat ion Theatre in Hillcrest. The central performance on Lambs Players Theater's production of Wit is stunning (performing in Coronado). Moxie Theatre will be starting performances of Skinless, which sounds like an interesting and off-beat show (the company performs in Rolando, and their theatre is not the easiest in the world to find, but they often do excellent work). If you enjoy camp there will be plenty of it at She-Rantulas From Outer Space, a world premiere being presented by Diversionary Theatre in University Heights. Opening night is November 2, and I will be there.

Cygnet Thestre, in Old Town, is using its November 1-3 downtime to present a new play festival and workshops. See the company's website for details.

Sometimes, a theatre company will sponsor a reading on Monday evenings, but I don't see any listed for the 4th.

Also, the new downtown library just opened and is worth a look. There might even be a performance of some sort there.

Enjoy,

Bill, in San Diego

Thanks so much, Bill. I was kicking myself when I realized I was missing Side Show by one day.

The Last Goodbye intrigues me, but the comments I've read are pretty lukewarm. Have you seen it?

Being a library lover, I'll definitely head downtown to take a look! And perhaps I'll see you at She-Rantulas.

Seen The Last Goodbye?

Yes. I rather liked it, which surprised me. The truncating of the original Shakespeare play did not bother me the way it did a number of my critic colleagues here, however. I've linked my TB Regional Review of it below.

With all of The Last Goodbye, Tallest Tree, and The Few, there is a good possibility that you'll be able to see them in New York, perhaps sooner than later.

If you have a chance, you might take in at least part of the new play festival at Cygnet. Its location in Old Town is a pleasant one for a number of reasons (though, give yourself plenty of time to park or take public transportation there), and some of the "heavy hitters" of the theatre community here will be participating in the workshops being presented as part of the festival.

Enjoy your trip. We've had very pleasant fall weather here of late, and that weather should hold into next weekend. And, you gain an hour in the shift to standard time on Saturday/Sunday.

Also, if you never got to see the NT Live HD version of Frankenstein, there will be an encore showing at 2pm Sunday, November 3, at the Gaslamp Cinemas, 5th and G, in downtown.
