SD: La Jolla Playhouse announces part of new season

Posted by: BillEadie 08:23 pm EST 11/08/13

No dates yet, but here are some shows they'll be staging:

Chasing the Song,a show about early 60s pop songwriters by Memphis creators Joe DiPietro and David Bryan. Playhouse Artistic Director Christopher Ashley directs. The show is in the Page-to-Stage series, which means they'll work on it from performance to performance and reviews won't be allowed. A staged reading of this show was put on for two nights only several months ago, and I think that it's fair to report that it was a real audience favorite. Page-to-Stage shows often run 3-5 weeks, and sometimes they have gone from the workshop environment to New York productions fairly quickly thereafter.

The Orphan of Zhao is a co-production with ACT of a play that has been called the Chinese Hamlet. Carey Perloff directs and B.D. Wong stars.

Kingdom City is a world premiere play by Sheri Wilner about a production of The Crucible in a small and very Christian community in Missouri. Tony Award winner Pam MacKinnon helms the production.

Ionesco's The Bald Soprano will be staged by Romanian director and head of Directing at UC San Diego’s Department of Theatre and Dance Gabor Tompa.

The Playhouse plans to announce additional shows and dates in the future.
