Bake 15 years, and sprinkle a pinch of polyamory. Serve hot, and voila! The result is this sizzling show about love addiction, created with help from contributing directors David Ford, Katie Rubin, and Jonathan Bender. Piedmont Avenue Repertory Theatre (PART) presents “The Dining Room” by A. R. Gurney at the Piedmont Center for the Arts, 801 Magnolia St., Piedmont CA OPENS Thu Nov 21 Fri Nov 22, Sat Nov 23, Sat Nov 29 at 8 pm Sun Nov 24 & Dec 1 at 7 pm Running time 2:15 including intermission The newly organized Piedmont Avenue Repertory Theatre (P.A.R.T.) will perform its inaugural production “The Dining Room” by A. R. Gurney on Thanksgiving weekend and the weekend before at the Piedmont Center for the Arts, 801 Magnolia St., Piedmont, CA. It is about the human comedy—and drama— that goes on in that special room that gets a lot of use in November and December. Gurney is perhaps best known for his play “Sylvia” (about a lost dog played by a woman), and he specializes in writing about “the upper-middle class WASPs of the northeastern United States.” An intriguing “hook” to the play is that six actors play 57 parts. The cast includes John Hale, Jamie Harkin, Brett Mermer, Karly Shea, Aaron Vanderbeek, and Susannah Wood. The Dramatists script explains, “The actors change roles, personalities and ages with virtuoso skill as they portray a wide variety of characters, from little boys to stern grandfathers, and from giggling teenage girls to Irish housemaids Gurney’s play is “the perfect play for grown-ups for the holidays.” said director John A. McMullen II who is the producer and artistic director of the new company. Don Cate, former chair of the City College of SF Theatre Department does lighting, and Regina Cate, retired head of the costume department at CSU/East Bay does costumes. The theatre company is searching for a venue to perform on Piedmont Avenue in Oakland to bring live theatre for grown-ups to Oakland – an art that is absent in a city of 400,000. Tickets are $25 for all and available at (800) 838-3006 or at TheDiningRoom.brownpapertickets.com The company’s website is www.PiedmontAveRep.org NOVEMBER by David Mamet closes out Dragon’s 1st season in Redwood City A lesbian, a turkey lobbyist, and a Native American walk into the White House... it's not a bad joke, it's November by David Mamet (Glengarry Glen Ross). There's hilariously biting commentary on the state of the union, a politically incorrect (and possibly inept) president in the death throes of his failing re-election campaign, and some Thanksgiving turkey pardons for sale - so basically it's vintage Mamet. Please be aware that this play contains a good deal of adult language (which is also vintage Mamet).WHO: Written by playwright David Mamet, directed by Troy Johnson WHEN: November 22 – December 15, 2013 Thursdays – Saturdays at 8pm (doors open at 7:30pm) Sundays at 2pm (doors open at 1:30pm) Pay-what-you-can preview on November 21st Opening night gala after the November 22nd show Post-show discussion after the show Sunday, December 8th WHERE: The Dragon Theatre in downtown Redwood City 2120 Broadway Street at the intersection of Broadway and Theatre Way HOW MUCH: $15 - $35 Pay-what-you-can preview on November 21st $10 rush tickets on Thursdays and Fridays after opening week TIX & MORE INFO: http://dragonproductions.net/activities/2013season/november.html The Marsh presents the World Premiere of THE JEWELRY BOX, a new family friendly holiday show by award-winning performer Brian Copeland (Not a Genuine Black Man, The Waiting Period, The Scion) and directed by David Ford. In this hilariously heartwarming story, a prequel to Copeland’s hit solo show Not a Genuine Black Man, a young Brian heads to the “mean streets” of Oakland to buy his mom a Christmas present. When he finds the perfect gift – a jewelry box in the White Front store – six-year-old Brian sets out to earn the required $11.97 by Christmas. Rife with references to 1970s Oakland, THE JEWELRY BOX follows Brian’s adventures as he scours the “help wanted” ads, applies for jobs, and collects bottles, inching his way toward the perfect Christmas gift. Presented as a workshop production to San Francisco audiences in December 2012, the show was an instant success, drawing larger audiences with each performance despite its under-the-radar profile. STOREFRONT CHURCH By John Patrick Shanley Directed by Joy Carlin November 26 - January 11th It's almost Christmas, and Tony, Oscar and Pulitzer winner, John Patrick Shanley (Doubt), transports us to a wintery Bronx, where gluttonous bankers devour giant gingerbread houses, a disillusioned preacher rediscovers his faith, and a modern day Scrooge is redeemed. Directed by Joy Carlin and starring popular Bay Area actors Derek Fischer, Rod Gnapp*, Carl Lumbly*, Gabriel Marin*, Ray Reinhardt* and Gloria Weinstock*, Storefront Church is a contemporary Holiday story: funny and touching, asking questions of us, showing both the good and bad sides of people but ultimately an uplifting and inspiring story. Storefront Church joins Doubt and Defiance to complete Tony, Oscar and Pulitzer winner John Patrick Shanley's "Church and State" trilogy where, as in all his best works, he calls out authority figures and tests their mettle with moral issues. Shanley elaborates: "I think, with the third play, it all comes to a landing place. I feel a sense of resolution about it. I'm quite pleased with Storefront Church. What it says is very applicable to the time we're living in. There is a dearth of places for people who have a spiritual hunger to satisfy, and there's a dearth of places for people who have the hunger for community to satisfy." Mary Zimmerman protégé Jeremy Bloom recreates J.M. Barrie's Classic Peter Pan for our times featuring a score by indie band, The Books. This perfect-for-the-holidays show flies Nov. 15-Dec. 15, with press night on Nov 19, 8pm. In recreating J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan and Wendy for our times, Bloom transforms the uniquely hallowed cathedral space of The Gough Street Playhouse into the world of Never-Never Land, as his seven pajama-clad performers fly, dance, and move around the space in perfect sync.Bloom has reversed the usual “Peter Pan” image by having six women portray all the characters in the book, including Hook, Smee, and Mr. Darling, while the only male in the cast portrays Peter. Bloom uses “happy thoughts” from the audience each night, as well as passers-by on the street, to create the pixie dust needed to make PETER/WENDY fly. He then employs his unique bare-bones, “image-staging” which involves the use of hand-held lights, the simplest of sets, and narrative movement to retell the tale of the one boy who never grew up, inspired by the dark and delightful words of its creator, J.M. Barrie. Custom Made is thrilled to introduce Mr. Bloom, and his seven San Francisco performers, to the Bay Area in this special holiday show. The show is scored by the indie band, The Books, http://www.thebooksmusic.com Cast of the Custom Made Theatre Production of PETER/WENDY Terry Bamberger (Hook, Mr. Darling), Sam Bertkin (Peter), Anya Kazimierski (Tinkerbell), Jessica Rudholm (The Tiger Lilly), Kim Saunders (Smee, Mrs. Darling), Jeunee Simon (A Lost Boy / A Mermaid), Elissa Stebbins (Wendy). About God of Carnage: While gathered around a coffee table sporting imported tulips and liberally covered with art books, the Novaks and the Raleighs share espresso and recipe secrets. What brings these two highly civilized married couples together, however, is the sincere desire to amicably resolve an altercation in the park between their 11-year-old sons in which Benjamin Raleigh suddenly whacked his playmate Henry Novak with a stick, breaking two of his incisors. Boys will be boys, but as this winner of the 2009 Tony Award and coveted Olivier Award proves, parental impulses can often be far, far worse. And ferociously funny.
