Matthew Bourne's "Sleeping Beauty" is pretty darn great

Posted by: bicoastal 02:01 am EST 11/22/13

It's at the Ahmanson for a short run, but it is more than worth the effort to see. The choreography is stunning and the dancing, especially that of the three leads, is absolutely breathtaking. Throw in gorgeous sets and costumes and you are in for a pretty darn great evening.

Just got back from opening night and I concur. Exceptional dancing and the visuals are terrific.

My only reservation is that it didn't hit me emotionally like some of the rest of Bourne's work. (I mean, I wept openly at both "Cinderella" and "Edward Scissorhands.") This was gorgeous and entertaining and witty and over-the-top (in a good way) but my heart didn't break for any of them.

But, damn, they danced well.

(Also, was it just me, or did anyone else REALLY want to see Caradoc and Lilac have a solid showdown? No? OK, never mind.)

That was one of my favorite parts!

Really? I liked the visual, but was disappointed from a dance point of view. Because it seemed that the whole scene was working its way up to a showdown between these two -- a let's just get everyone else out of the way and watch these two dancers attack each other (a concept of which I wholly approve, as one of the things Bourne does really really well is choreograph for strong, charismatic male dancers). So I was waiting for that to happen and when they actually got there, it was a stunning visual, but pretty anti-climactic in terms of awesome dance.

God I wish I could get down to LA to see this. I love Matthew's work.

Same here. We saw this company's production of Cinderella in London several years ago. It was fantastic.

I think it's only touring in six cities, and if you can, I think you'd find it worthwhile. But several of his ballets have been filmed....don't know about any plans for this one though.

It was indeed filmed, and is now available on DVD and Blu-ray.
