I saw "Cuckoo's Nest" at the Little Fox in 1972 or 1973. I thought that theatre was in North Beach near Broadway. Does anyone know exactly where it was?

Yes, your right. However I can't remember the street. I remember flying up here from Los Angeles on week ends and attending the Little Fox. I also saw "Cuckoo's Nest" there plus "Snoopy" If memory serves me, I also saw "Fortune Through Men's Eyes" there also.

I remember the theatre was made over to somewhat look like the magnificent Fox Theatre on Market. The theatre had artifacts from the old Fox Theatre that had been torn down.

i believe that 'fortune in men's eyes' played around the corner on montgomery in a theatre that was under city disco. that is also where 'boys in the band' played and 'decline and fall...cole porter' also played. little fox also had the first production in sf of 'the fantasticks' and after 'cuckoo's nest' closed, the maltby shire review 'closer than ever'. after 'fantasticks' closed at the little fox it moved to a theatre in ghiradelli square in what is now the fairmont hotel suites. 'you're a good man charlie brown' also moved there and they ran in rep. this space in ghiradelli was not the same space where the hungry i moved to and where 'dames at sea' opened. that space (where ana mandara restaurant is now) was turned into a movie theatre for awhile. the lost little theatres of sf.

Thanks for jarring my memory. I invested in the Los Angeles production that starred a very young Don Johnson and Sal Mineo. That was his last performance before his untimely death.

I believe Sal Mineo's last performance was in SF in the comedy "P.S. Your Cat is Dead."

I has the opportunity to interview him near the end of the show's run. He was funny, kind and fascinating.

I first met this charming man when I was part of the camera crew on Rebel Without a Cause. I maintained a friendship with him until his untimely death.

James Franco has made a film of his last days on earth that has scenes of the rehearsals of "P.S. Your Cat is Dead". The film is called SAL

It was at 535 Pacific Ave, between Kearny and Montgomery.

WOW!! Terrific! Thinks for letting me know.

How did you find it? I did lots of Googling and couldn't find anything regarding the location.

I googled "little fox theater san francisco" and one of the first links was a real estate site with that address. Digging a little further I found the image of the building that still has the "Little Fox" sign over the entrance.

Actually, Google Maps has a beautiful picture of that location with a nice picture of the Little Fox Theatre Building.

Did they retain the theatre? Is this a new building?

unfortunately the theatre is no more. but the building, in fact all the buildings on the 500 block of pacific are historical buildings dating back to the gold rush.
what is more, this is the block that once was called the international settlement, and most of the buildings had clubs in them. it was the same kind of street as what broadway became (that's broadway sf) years later, one block north.
you can see what this block looked like in the 1950's in the movie of pal joey.
