Grasses of a Thousand Colors - Smart, Yes, but....

Posted by: Shutterbug 07:54 pm EST 11/30/13

Wallace Shawn has written a smart, thoughtful meditation on life, death, sex, ethics, and love - essentially what it means to be human. It is often funny, at times quite perverse, and beautifully performed by its talented cast. I also found it overly long and periodically dull. Last night it began just a few minutes after 7 and didn't end until 10:25. At nearly 3 1/2 hours, it plays more like a recitation and less like a drama. There isn't much dramatic tension as the story unfolds in a dream-like series of free associations. Wallace Shawn is, clearly, a singular talent as both writer and performer. Jennifer Tilly does what she does best in the role of the sexy mistress. Julie Haggerty is wonderful as Shawn's long suffering wife. For me, however, these elements engaged the mind much more than the heart.
