As Peter Biskind points out in his new book about Welles, The Magnificent Ambersons as it was initially released was maudlin with its absurd, tacked-on happy ending, filmed without Welles' consent. The movie could have been great. Read this book in the link to find out what the original intention was.

Around the time Agnes Moorehead was appearing on Bway in the musical version of GIGI there was talk of re-filming the original ending of Ambersons with Joseph Cotten, but it never came to pass. The money couldn't be raised.
