The "reputable source" I found on the internet in my 5 minutes of research is the 2nd Edition of **British Dramatists from Dryden to Sheridan** by Professors George H. Nettleton of Yale and Arthur E. Case of Northwestern. Their statement seems more time-based than style-based:"The term 'Restoration Comedy' has been loosely applied to English comedy written during the whole period from the return of Charles II in 1660 to an indeterminate date half a century later. Another term for the comedy of the same period is Çomedy of Manners.'"

Regardless, I do think it is fairly common for all comedies of manners to be referred to in this way, perhaps outside of scholarly study of the period, and I am not sure it really matters to most folks. And in that context, it wouldn't seem McNally has committed quite the whopper of a mistake that has been suggested (although I note I haven't seen the play, so I can't speak to the specific context). Whether that represents a withering of meaning that's important is, obviously, open to discussion.
