I understand the point, but I don't think that example is the best. Obviously, when you say 1950s, you are referring to a date certain. Restoration, on the other hand, refers to a period that is (as the cite I gave describes it) is indeterminate.

All of this specificity about restoration comedies is fine, technically, but I think it is obscuring my point, which is that in common usage people lump all semi-contemporaneous comedy of manner type shows under the term synonymously. If you do a google search, you'll find plenty of examples of this "error," and language is about usage, not technical definitions.
