The Restoration IS a specific time. No historian EVER uses it to refer to the late 1700s (or even the early 1700s for that matter).

While you are right that one can find errors all over the internet when you google. So why not look at a history site, an encyclopedia or even Wikipedia?

Even so, the closest thing to what you are claiming is a site that talks about The Restoration and the 18th Century. But if you read down you will notice that that this site names 1700 as the end of the Restoration.

It is not even a technical usage. I can say that today is Easter---and you can say it is not. I could claim that technically it is not, but that this is about usage---and people change the date of Easter every year anyway.

We don't go to see a Terrence McNally play for a history lesson, (or for that matter even dramatic logic) and we may be willing to gloss over something for the sake of a laugh. But this is getting a bit Humpty Dumtyish.

------
'I don't know what you mean by "glory",' Alice said.

Humpty Dumpty smiled contemptuously. 'Of course you don't — till I tell you. I meant "there's a nice knock-down argument for you!"'

'But "glory" doesn't mean "a nice knock-down argument",' Alice objected.

'When I use a word,' Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, 'it means just what I choose it to mean — neither more nor less.'
