I'm not sure I am actually saying anything all that different than what you are saying. Unquestionably, no historian would identify the restoration outside of its manifest years. Likewise, no dramaturg would refer to something as a restoration comedy that isn't.

But that does not mean that, in common usage, folks don't call The School for Scandal a restoration comedy. And it's not a Humpty Dumpty self-definition. Rather, it is a casual as opposed to technical reference-kind of like my saying "I have the flu" (I don't-I got my flu shot!) when what I actually have is a bad cold. My doctor might tell me I am wrong-and it may matter to the doctor-but it is of no significance when I am cancelling dinner plans. Common usage how we communicate in a society, and when a playwright employs common usage (as I am assming McNally did), that's not the faux pas it was made out to be in the post to which I originally responded. That, and only that, is my point.
