But a casual reference is only "incorrect" if it is not commonly used: that's how language evolves, and why words had different meanings in, say, Shakespeare than we understand today.

Yes, we can bristle at these linguistic evolutions, and all of us have pet peeves along these lines. But the fact that we can look up what is technically correct really has little to do with it. It's about how culture communicates. And when we deal with historical terms, these terms are doubly complicated, because what is significant evolves not only in the language but in the very history itself.
