Big Fish - What happened?

Posted by: Drew288 05:18 pm EST 12/01/13

Just back from a whirlwind trip to NYC (four shows in 48 hours!) and I saw something brilliant ("Fun Home"), something middling but enjoyable ("Little Miss Sunshine"), something I'd seen before ("Wicked" from the lottery winning seats...my partner had never seen a broadway show so I thought this was a safe bet as a first experience and the lottery win clinched it!) and finally something...confusing ("Big Fish").

The talent on-stage and off is wildly obvious here. And during the first act, my admiration for it far outweighed my enjoyment. It just wasn't "my thing" as I said repeatedly at intermission. And yet, I was surprised that the show didn't find an audience (as shows that aren't my thing often do!). Then, the second act came and I enjoyed it infinitely more...not to mention the fact that it made me bawl in my seat (as did everyone around me).

So a show that I admired but disliked ultimately won me over. And there is clear skill and talent at play here. So...what happened? Is this one of the most surprising failures of recent memory?

And will the score be recorded?

Looking forward to your insights!
