I'm not sure either -- saw the show in Chicago and liked it, then saw it a few months later in NYC and loved it -- and it basically didn't change between the two other then some very minor tweaks... It is being recorded according to Susan Strohman. I am not sure how big a "failure" the show is -- my own take on it is that these gigantic shows are now so over-produced (i.e. too many producers) to make them financially feasible -- and those producers want their tax write-off as soon as possible (i.e. close the show in Dec, you get the tax write off in a few months -- let the show run until May and you have to defer your tax writeoff until 2015)...same thing happened with Bonnie & Clyde and look how huge a hit that has become in the regional and community theater circuit nationwide... The show is selling tickets -- word of mouth is generally very good -- grown men come to cry night after night...but it probably wouldn't do knock-out business beyond the spring... I have said before and I will say again, don't be surprised when Big Fish is nominated for a Best Musical Tony award even months after it has closed.
