I absolutely love Orson Welles, but having read about him, I have always felt a little sorry for him.

He couldn't take the discipline of the studios, but without it, he didn't have the success he might have. I don't blame him for not liking what the studios did to his work. Bette Davis once said that directors normally don't give the studio much that's extra so they can't do cuts.

In later years, he'd make a movie and couldn't get a distributor. He would talk with people like Spielberg in hopes he would help him, but all these big shots wanted to do was talk about Citizen Kane. No one helped him. He was very disappointed. And he always had money problems.

He was amazingly talented, innovative, a fantastic larger than life personality, but I always think of him wandering the earth like a nomad for years.
