Like several people below, I don't find the show's commercial failure particularly surprising. The show's source material is not that well known. The cast isn't "starry," except to theater mavens. By most accounts, the score needed to be better. And audiences were definitely of two minds (at least) about the book and the show's overall impact. Some were moved; some were bored. That all sounds to me like a pretty good recipe for a 100-performance Broadway failure, which is just about what happened.
