And the film on which it's based - Delvino 08:15 pm EST 12/01/13 |

There may be many reasons why ''Big Fish'' didn't catch on, and Castro and Delvino have put their finger on many of them. I'd add that I wasn't that crazy about the movie. Or even the original shaggy-dog premise it's based on.
I had seen ''Big Fish'' late in previews and really enjoyed it, but when I recently revisited it, it hooked me even more. Maybe I was in the right mood and just fell under its spell. Maybe I no longer went in with expectations and could appreciate it for what it is. Maybe I'm just a sucker for father-son stories 'cause it made me cry. (The bedside scene between Will and Edward, which is beautifully acted by Bobby Steggert and Norbert Leo Butz, hit me especially hard.)
But what puzzles me is how some folks seem to lay the blame exclusively at Andrew Lippa's feet. As if another score would've solved everything. I don't agree. I might have issues with the balancing act of the father-son struggle vs. Edward's tall tales, and how John August's plot unfolds, but not with Lippa's glorious music and clever lyrics.
I find ''Be the Hero'' a very catchy opener. I love how the word ''Stranger'' goes through different meanings in Will's big solo. And ''Time Stops'' is a touching song with one of the loveliest melodies I've heard this fall.
If you still haven't seen ''Big Fish,'' give it a chance, especially with this magical cast; it's full of allure.
