I agree with what you state about McNally's and Gurney's inconsistency. Maybe it's a price that comes with being very prolific. What shocked me so much about MASTER CLASS--other than his trashing the supposed idol of his operagoing life--was that I had only recently seen LOVE! VALOUR!...which I adored.
Whatever faults Gurney has, he certainly doesn't write a play just to make a buck. I haven't "sworn off" McNally; I just go very carefully and never on his name alone. Hence, I did see MAN OF NO IMPORTANCE and other musicals(RAGTIME, FULL MONTY)as well as DEUCE for obvious reasons.
