Awards aren't everything. De gustibus, as some old Roman said, but the film remains one of the most emotionally powerful ones for me (like Wayman, I'm a sucker for father-son stories, perhaps because my own dad died at 59 when I was 25). I'm not one to cry at movies (thanks to mood meds, I fear), but I was sobbing both when son carries dad to the water and also the SPOILER funeral scene when we see all the (seemingly) imaginary folk there to pay last respects. The novel is a fine book, too.

This may not count for much, but I know the head of our scriptwriting program teaches the novel and the screenplay in beginning screenwriting, so it has its admirers.

I've not seen the musical and am not likely to, though I like the performers very much. The movie is so indelible for me that, given the responses I've read, I don't think I need to see the musical. But I don't think the impulse to turn it into a musical was in any way a bad idea or unreasonable. It is a fairy tale and a family story--two bedrocks of musical theatre. That it didn't turn out better or have greater success in its Broadway run (and these may be two different things) is sad, given the talent involved.
