...but I'm with you, singleticket. Was terribly disappointed by Gentleman's Guide and I am genuinely puzzled by the overwhelming critical praise the show received. It was one of the shows I was most looking forward to seeing this season, but what a blunder. Serviceable it the perfect word for the score -- though, to be fair, I do think there are occasional instances of clever, witty lyrics. I also thought some of Mays' characters to be really bizarre -- he played the elder female relative not as a woman, but as a burly man dressed in drag! And the last heir he played was so performed so crassly and with such exaggeration. It pushed too hard; as did the the actress playing his wife in the second act. No doubt, the director's fault. I thought Bryce Pinkham was a very sly and charming leading man, the lead females had lovely voices and Jonathan Tunick's orchestrations were excellent as ever. Everything else felt muddled and misguided. But clearly we are in the minority on this one.
