If Mr Filichia really believes what he wrote, why is his column set up to do exactly that. Certainly, Mary Martin
deserves to be saluted, and I remain one of her biggest fans. But his praise of her vs Merman is IMO just a little over the top! I dont recall ever hearing Mary Martin referred to as The First Lady of Musical Theater. Any savvy theater goer knows that title belonged to Merman. That fact was acknowledged in her obit in the NY Times, and many other papers from here to London.

Funny, if Mary Martin were with us today, she would probably be the first to disagree about Merman.
