Interesting. I don't know why women performers are always compared to each other like this in ways men rarely are.

They were so different. Both wonderful. They sincerely seemed to have profound respect for each other, and understandably so.

Martin does seem wonderful in the ANNIE GET YOUR GUN clips I've seen. Even if we'd had Merman clips to compare them to, they wouldn't really replicate the experience of seeing them live.

Kazan, after directing her in ONE TOUCH OF VENUS, thought enough of Martin's acting ability to consider casting her in A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE. None of the original GYPSY production team seemed to have thought much at all of Merman's acting abilities.

For the audience, I'd say it all comes down to whether you prefer the force of nature singing of Merman or the down to earth charms of Martin. They each set the standard for the leading musical ladies to follow (as Verdon did for leading lady dancers).

I only wish I'd been around to see them!
