"I don't recall ever hearing Mary Martin referred to as The First Lady of Musical Theater." Really?

Growing up I often heard both of them referred to a "The first lady of the musical theatre." I think that was even the idea behind uniting them for the legendary Ford 50th Anniversary TV special back in 1953. And when they reunited for one night only in May 1977, I believe Mayor Beame proclaimed them both first ladies from the stage of the Broadway. One could argue that one deserved the title more than the other, but it was common parlance to hear each described that way.
