The 1948 film (whose screenplay was credited to Rattigan) told the same story but with a somewhat different approach. Sir Robert's impassioned speech before the House of Commons is presented very effectively in the film. Scenes from the trial are in the film also. One difference in the film is that although Ronnie has been telling the truth about not stealing the money, he has not been truthful about what he was actually doing alone in the locker room for 30 minutes and does not fare well under a brutal cross-examination by the prosecution. Sir Robert (who understood all along the boy's reluctance to reveal the whole truth) then cleverly tricks Ronnie into revealing his previously undisclosed smoking habit. As a result, the prosecution relents, withdraws the charges, and proclaims the boy innocent.

BTW, in 1908 London the accusation of theft by the Admiralty, which represented the king, against Ronnie was a very serious charge. If not withdrawn, the Winslow family would have been seriously disgraced and most likely would no longer been accepted in their society. Ronnie also would have been marked for life and would have had a difficult time securing a proper education and proper employment afterward.
