Martin agreed reluctantly to star in "One Touch of Venus," although not quite right for the lead role. The show was a hit, and I doubt that she missed many performances (Martin also did the tour). According to co-star Paula Laurence, Kurt Weill and Agnes de Mille were very grateful, but especially Elia Kazan.

Who knows if Kazan really thought that Martin could play Blanche, but it fits with everything else he said publicly about Martin, and according to Laurence [Encores! post "One Touch of Venus" discussion], privately.
