I understand what you are suggesting, but I can't think of any evidence to support it. There are many shows that are selling very well but with few if any tickets at premium prices. My sense is that most folks, visitors included, recognize that premium prices are about celebrities and mega-hits (and to a smaller extent, to prime seats), and the price point does not equate to quality. What DOES equate to quality (rightly or wrongly) much more is selling out, but that's pretty much independent of price. The issue for producers is battling the notion that "if we can't see Book of Mormon, we won't go to the theatre," not that "we don't want to see something that we've heard is great becasue it is a (relative) bargain." The old maxim remains true: if people don't want to see a show, you can't pay them enough to sit through it. I'd be curious to hear what evidence you have to support your false impression theory...
