I don't think premium tickets are "saving" Broadway either but wow, the rest of what you say in that first paragraph makes no sense. First you find no evidence shows recoup any faster. (If you look, you'll find plenty.) Then you say they "may recoup a little faster," which obviously contradicts the first sentence. Then you shift to a discussion of how long it takes to recoup, apparently unaware that the object is not to make a "nice profit" but the biggest damn profit you can. Your "data" about how long it takes to recoup is dead wrong-easily demonstrated by public facts (and even more so by not so public ones). Happily, you then veer back into territory where we can agree-premium pricing doesn't make hits out of flops, but it does make more money for the producers, hopefully to reinvest in more shows. But even if they do, I don't think we are talking "saving" Broadway but, arguably, making it a little more appealing as an investment.

The data on production levels has to be viewed in context-there is an annual traffic jam for theatres, so very little chance of significantly altering the numbers without building more venues, which isn't likely to happen in any meaningful way. And any added shows would be "fillers" that more or less have to be celebrity driven premium priced affairs.
