I'm with you up to the last paragraph. Broadway isn't (generally) a place to take risks of the artistic sort. I think it confounds things to mix that up with off-Broadway. And there is still a load of off-B venues that take risks. It's also confounding to lump that in with what has been lost, which is the commercial (not the cheap) off-B spaces. And yes, I obviously agree more funding for nonprofit theatre would be nice. But I don't see what that has to do with saving Broadway at all. Apples and oranges in my book.
