Several reactions: First of all, a majority of people have never gone to the theatre. Second, Broadway is no place to get a kid hooked on playgoing. Third, there are thousands of opportunities for young people who cannot afford to pay high prices for tickets to go to the theatre, and those are places they are more likely to gain an appreciation for it than on Broadway. (That said, there are also loads of Broadway tickets given away or sold for very low prices every day.) Fourth, if young people are dying to see a particular Broadway show, they'll see it-whether by getting rush or even standing room tickets, or by spending the money for the ticket that they otherwise would have spent on some other entertainment. Fifth, if you really care about the theatre, you will not perpetuate the notion that it only exists on Broadway. I have seen shows on Broadway that I will always remember, but I have seen a helluva lot more shows off Broadway and off-off Broadway that I cherish just as much or more.
