Broadway was absolutely once a place where artistic risks could be taken. Case in point: Arthur Miller could get All My Sons produced; it could flop; and he could come back and have a second chance with Death of a Salesman.

That creative seedbed moved off Broadway after WW II. Subsequently, the Manhattan real estate boom greatly reduced the number of off Broadway commercial theaters where artistic risks could be taken. Many of those remaining are non-profit entities with philanthropic funding streams. They support a much smaller number of stages than at one time.

If anyone is going to decry the profit-based model driving premium pricing, will they kindly reveal the alternative model they propose? Shall we re-establish an aristocracy and have royal patronage of the arts, like in old Europe? Maybe we could get David Cameron or Angela Merkel to come over to do a stint as our Minister of Culture?
