I do not think it is accurate to say there are less off-B theatres than before; I think there are more overall, though the nature of them has shifted from for profit to non-profit, and I think the work product is of a higher level than what was done commercially. That's not to say I don't wish there was more commercial off-B theatre, but at the time there was, there was nothing like as much high quality institutional off-B theatre.

I've never decried what happens on Broadway, but I think it is its own ecosystem, with some degree of cross-pollination. The off-B model is working-there are lots of thriving off-B theatres, and Broadway serves as an outlet for the most commercially viable elements of it, once there is no more risk. We could use more government funding, but today that's little more than a pipedream.
