I don't wish to quibble, but since you used the word silly, I can't resist checking -- is it your contention that the Manhattan real estate landscape is the same today for performing arts spaces as 40 or 50 years ago? That the cost of producing a show on Broadway hasn't risen? That a new work by a young, challenging playwright can open directly on Broadway, not once, but twice, even after the first one flops? If so, perhaps you can enlighten me with an example.

The question was whether premium pricing is saving the theater. I think it's responding to historical pressures. In debating this theory, I'll promise not to wax nostalgic if you promise not to wear rose-colored glasses (I won't call you silly back).
