Take it for what it's worth, but in Merman's autobiography, she seems to attribute her New York-centric career to wanting to be with her family. As I recall, she wrote that she agreed to tour, for the first time, in GYPSY because she loved the part and for the first time in her life she didn't have a husband or children at home who needed her. Martin, by most accounts (including elsewhere in this thread) was not as concerned about being there for her children and could, of course, take to the road whenever an opportunity presented itself. Martin's stategy worked in the short term, but, nowadays, it's Merman who's remembered by the public at large (not theatre people, who surely know both). And it's Merman who is still a go-to impression for comics and singers.
