He also played Tom in that production.

Mr Dowling first appeared on Broadway in 1919 in Victor Herbert's THE VELVET LADY, and later that year in The ZIEGFELD FOLLIES OF 1919 with Eddie Cantor, Bert Williams & Marilyn Miller. In 1922 he wrote the book and appeared in SALLY, IRENE, & MARY, a hit musical - and in 1923 with eddie Cantor in a bigger hit, KID BOOTS. In 1925 he was in the Gershwins' TELL ME MORE In 1926 it was book, lyrics, and acting in a hit musical HONEYMOON LANE; in 1927, book, music & lyrics for SIDEWALKS OF NEW YORK with Ruby Keeler; In 1929 - he started producing. Including Margaret Webster's production of RICHARD II starring Maurice Evans. In 1938 he produced and co starred in Philip Barry;s HERE COME THE CLOWNS; and in 1939 he co produced, directed and co starred in Saroyan;s THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE; In 1941 he directed and designed lights for the hit revue SONS O FUN, starring Olsen & Johnson, and featuring Carmen Miranda and Ella Logan; more plays followed with co stars like Billie Burke, Herbert Berghof, and Frances Reid. And then - wow - directing and playing Tom in GLASS MENAGERIE in 1946, and directing the original production of THE ICEMAN COMETH with EG Marshall and Jeanne Cagney in 1946. In 1951-2 he went into PAINT YOUR WAGON as Ben Rumson (as a replacement) and ended his career in 1955 directing and producing a play called THE RIGHTEOUS AND THE BOLD.

What a life in the theatre. From hoofer to producer director of three of the greatest 20th Century Plays - THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE, THE GLASS MENAGERIE, and THE ICEMAN COMETH. Wow. Double Wow.
