A die-hard Camelot fan here:
You need charisma, but the leads need not be celebrities, just great actor-singers who are capable of playing the "stakes." On second thought, you need a GREAT Arthur, but thats find-able. Plus you need a non-literal director and a not-too-heavy-handed or literal scene design with sumptuous costumes. A good Shakespeare director who can keep the through line moving between transitions would work. I think it works. But it needs to be evanescent not earth-bound (yoiks, that ridiculously overgrown tree in the Arena Stage circa 2000 was an awful choice). And it's not about the "adultery" with Lancelot, which, wisely, in my opinion, the creators decided to keep un-consummated. It's about how they're all three invested in his vision.

Over-production can kill it. Agreed, the score is glorious. I prefer that score to GIGI, FAIR LADY, even NIGHT MUSIC, SOUTH PACIFIC, and MUSIC MAN. It's in a league with, for me, CAROUSEL, SOUND OF MUSIC and WEST SIDE STORY. Sheer grandeur.
