I guess you weren't standing up at the end as almost every playgoer was. Actually I was: once the people in front of me stand up, I do as well so I can see the bows. Regardless, if "almost every playgoer" was very enthusiastic, word of mouth would have kept the show open (as happened with WICKED, for example).
